socks

I started knitting this pair of socks when we got down here in Texas.
It may be the first pair that I finished in less than a year.

They are knit with worsted weight yarn making them more like a slipper.
They will be nice and warm when we get back to South Dakota.

observations

Texas Observations:
- Texas is a huge state with a lot of history.
- Road signage is terrible
- The traffic is also terrible

- It seems like I am either hot or cold. This South Dakota girl just hasn't adapted yet
- It's like South Dakota spring here now and we will get two springs this year.
- I did not know they grow cotton or pecans here.
It seems there is a lot about Texas I did not know.
- I am not going home until I see an armadillo or bluebonnets.

- I love the live oaks.
Oak is my favorite wood as so much antique furniture was made with it.

-  Their Mexican cuisine is delicious but I have yet to have barbecue or a margarita.
- My favorite so far has been the Gulf of Mexico and Port Aransas.
- The garbage in the ditches is terrible...which makes me appreciate SD even more.
I'll add more to this list later...I have sightseeing to go to right now.

Texas projects

When we aren't out sightseeing I am back at the camper doing handwork.
These two crochet pieces were part of my old projects-in-progress
that I brought along.

I am glad to report they are both finished and I am working on
a couple of new projects that I started while here.

church

Yesterday we spent a sunny day in Central Texas visiting the historic churches near Schlenburg.

When Czech and German immigrants came to Texas in the 1800s, many settled in the central part of the state and named their towns after the places they'd left -
Praha, Schlenburg, Dubina, Fredericksburg.

In an effort to make their new churches feel more like the ancient Gothic structures of homeland, these early settlers painted the walls, altars and arches of their simple wooden sanctuaries in colorful patterns and tromp l'oeil images. These buildings came to be known as the Painted Churches of Texas.

We viewed four churches in all. They were absolutely beautiful.

Tomorrow we head back north an hour for a couple of weeks.
We are hoping to see the bluebonnets blooming before we leave Texas.

made in Mexico

Yesterday we visited the Mexican Markets in San Antonio.
This black and beige girl loved all the colors there.

I was determined that I would finally get that margarita...
but no, the machine was down being cleaned.

I loved shopping for the granddaughters here.

Remember the Alamo

These are the times that I wish I had paid attention in history classes.
I will have to pick up a book to read about the Alamo in depth
because at 66 I am finally interested in American history.
Took awhile didn't it?

It is so humbling to find yourself standing in these historical spots.

San Antonio

Today we worked up our courage and drove into San Antonio
to see the River Walk and the Alamo.
Honestly, how do people do this drive everyday?

To get there between rush hour traffic we didn't have a lot of time.

Of course we had to eat Mexican...real Mexican.
